how can i stretch a window over two displays?

Hi - how can i stretch a window to display over two screens?

I have had this working in the past but now have a new Mac and need to set it up again. I have a second display but when I stretch a window over the two displays half of it fades out.

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Uncheck "Displays have separate Spaces" in "Mission Control" system preference, logout, then login.
