Installed Yosemite 4 wks ago. When I turn on my iMac it hangs with a black screen and the pointer half way through boot-up. After re-installing OS X (command-R) everything works nicely until I cold boot my iMac again. Same issues occurs.
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5), Mac OS X10.10.2
Try running Apple Diagnostics: Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support and see if anything turns up. If not, you may need to take it into the Apple Store.

Rebooted, held the D key down. Nothing. would not get me into Apple Diagnostics. Thank you anyways
Try holding down the "D" key before the computer finishes rebooting, meaning try holding down "D" as soon as you initiate the restart.

I inserted CD Disc 1, with the diagnostic tools (Apple hardware test) on it and held down the D key while booting and it got me into hardware test
Good. Did a screen that looks like this come up:
If it did, you should probably take it into the Apple store.
