The screen should go blank when held to your face. Its called a proximity sensor. If your screen is staying lit - you need to have the phone inspected at an Apple store (or Apple Service provider).
Thank you!!!! How do you suggest I find a reputable Apple Service provider as the Apple stores are not convenient. Thanks again!

Shop the Apple Online Store (1-800-MY-APPLE), visit an Apple Retail Store, or find a reseller.
Usually the proximity sensor does that for you. If the screen does not lock when taking a call, make sure that the sensor, which is located on the top of the screen, is not covered by a case or protective film, if you added one to the screen.
If you have no case and nothing is mounted onto the screen, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again.
You will not lose data by resetting, but is can clear some glitches.
If this does not work, setting it up as new device would be the next step:
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
