Without know what Mac you are running, the RAM installed and the current state of the system drive including free space, there is no way we can suggest anything at this time.

It's much easier to just use Firefox or Chrome and stop using Safari. They both work with 10.6.8 and get regular security updates.
If you prefer to use Safari and need a newer version to load the sites you visit you will need to upgrade OS X.
Your MBP can be upgraded to Yosemite which will give you Safari 8.0.3.
If will not support any PPC code, so if you have any of the very old PowerPC coded applications that you are currently using, they will need to be upgraded prior to upgrading the operating system.
Yes. I have been using Firefox successfully EXCEPT all my bookmarks and passwords are on my Safari.
It is basically my Mail that does not work well on Safari. It is extremely slow in loading and responding. I check mail on Firefox and go back to Safari for my banking, etc.
Thanks for your reply.
You can import your Safari Bookmarks into Firefox. I would NOT do ANY banking using an old version of Safari!! Even the current version is potentially not secure right now:

What was the issue? Your Mac meets the requirements for Yosemite.
Went to Apple site.
Selected Download Yosemite
Gat s message that the address was not valid. It was not one I entered. It was one from the site.
AThink I solved the problem by discontinuing Safari and changing to Chrome.
Thanks for reply.
Yes, I was in the store for apps and got to download yosemite. I just referred to it as the "Apple Site" so sorry for the confusion.
Chrome also gets regular security updates. Best to just stay away from Safari. Even the current version needs a patch at the moment.
I am NOT a fan of anything Google.
Plus, their privacy policies and practices (or lack thereof) stink.
Google apps, like Chrome AND Google Drive are serious Mac and OS X resource hogs and tend to slow down the normal performance of OS X.
If you find both your Internet and your Mac slowing down over a period of time, it's probably due to the use of Google Chrome.
I would just stick with FireFox which has a lot better performance and support on the Mac and has been around for a very long time (since very early 2000’s) which Google Chrome has not.
I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly and have switched to using DuckDuckGo as my preferred search engine.
I would always take Firefox over Chrome or Safari, in part because I really want to show my bookmarks in the sidebar. Safari finally implemented that capability in a recent upgrade, but it wasn't done well. And then there is the whole Google data-mining operation.
