Q: Local iPhone Sync Possible in 10.10 Yosemite, or iCloud Sync only?

With OS X 10.10 Yosemite and iOS 8.x, is there any way to sync contacts (and preferably calendar & notes) locally between Mac & iPhone, using my USB-to-lightning cable, NOT using iCloud? (As in olden days of 10.7?) I simply can't find a way, and none of the IT professionals at the local university know, either.

I upgraded from 10.7 -> 10.10, so missed the big furor when Apple omitted local sync in Mavericks 10.9. I read that Apple brought back local sync in a later version of Mavericks due to the backlash. But I can't even find a discussion about how to (or even if you can) sync locally with 10.10 Yosemite.

I have been following this discussion closely because I have not yet upgraded to Yosemite and was traumatized by the loss of local sync with the first version of Mavericks.  Now that it is back, I don't want to lose it by moving to Yosemite.  Since I have not made the move yet, I would like to know if there is something I can do, box to check or uncheck, etc to avoid all the contortions described above to "get your data back from iCloud."  Can I keep iCloud out of my life from the beginning, or does clicking on "install Yosemite" mean that I have to give up my privacy to iCloud and then do all this stuff to get it back?

    Thanks for your advice!

You don't have to sign into iCloud if you don't wish to. If you do choose to sign into iCloud, uncheck any boxes for enabling iCloud for Mail, etc. when you sign in. Then if you choose to, you can go to the iCloud preferences and check only the items you want to enable.

Even if you put your data into iCloud and decide you don't want it there, you can still recover it.

If you decide to upgrade, make sure you have a good backup to restore from just in case.

Thanks for such a quick and clear reply!  I use Time Capsule to routinely back up to a Western Digital "My Book for Mac" external HD, so presumably that would help me restore, if necessary.  I may just get up my courage and do this tomorrow.

If you are going to upgrade, make sure you have a healthy system. Repair disk permissions if you hadn't done that in a while. Disconnect any externals from your system. Disable any virus software if you have any. Check compatibility with any programs you are running. I wouldn't upgrade with less than 4 gig ram.

Fix any issues you have now and don't expect an upgrade to fix them for you unless you plan on doing a clean install.

Yes, any full backup will allow you to do a restore. Using the recovery drive, you should be able to select a date from Time Machine to do a full restore from if you have problems.

I'm not advising you whether or not to upgrade. I don't know what benefits you will get or if they will be worth it to you. If you have any doubt on whether or not to do it, you may want to post your own discussion on this matter. An EtreCheck report included with your post will let other see what hardware you have and what  is on your system that may cause problems.

Appreciate the cautions and advice re preparations for upgrading.  I do have 8 B RAM (and an SSD).  But, as you point out, the basic issue is whether I need/want Yosemite - I don't think it offers any new capabilities that I really care about, so it is probably not worth dealing with an upgrade, unless I get to the point where something crucial no longer works with Mavericks.  I understand that this is probably material for a different thread.  But what is EtreCheck?

    Thanks.

EtreCheck is a diagnostic tool. It is very useful in looking for problems on your system. You can search the forum and see how people have been using it.

You have an SSD. If you run TRIM enabler, then you need to be aware that Yosemite doesn't support it and you will have problems if you try to upgrade with it enabled. If you hadn't done so already, google info on that before upgrading.

Hi all, just wanted to mention.... once you have done all that jazz (backup calendars, sign out of iCloud, integrate new calendars and contact to your computer and then check box "Sync to this computer" etc..... which I have done) you may still not see the events or the contacts on your iphone.

Click on Calendars> Hide all Calendars and then "show all Calendars" and for some reason it refreshes all the information on your phone and everything that was inputed on your computer appears.

The inverse is not happening however. The computer Calendar is not showing the events that were inputted on the phone.

Does anyone know anything about this glitch?

    All help appreciated.

    Thanks
