My Macbook Pro has started to run really slowly

Please can somebody advise me how I can speedup my Macbook Pro? I suspect I may be out of memory as I have a lot of photos stored on my machine.

Thank you.

Problem description:

Macbook Pro is running really slow, Disc Utilities advised me to start in Recovery Mode and perform repair, but this doesn’t seem to work

I get the following message:-

Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD”

This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.

When I try to run disc repair in OS X Utilities, nothing seems to happen - any idea what I'm doing wrong?

My Macbook Pro has started to run really slowly
