iPhone Google Calendar Sync Problems

I purchased an iPhone 5c some 2 years ago and set up the calendar to share/sync calendar with Google calendar with my initial set up. This has worked fine until recently, when for an unknown reason it stopped syncing. The iPhone will update Google calendar but not the other way. This morning the sync worked and updated all old appointments, but then stopped again.
