The badge on my messages will not show up on my homescreen?

When someone sends you a message and the message is unread, the badge is supposed to show up on your message icon on the home screen. Recently, mine stopped showing the badge. I checked all the settings and everything is turned on. I have even restarted my phone.. What can I do?
