Newsstand problem
Once I access Newsstand (on iPhone6 or iPad2), the only way to get out of it and use another app is to reboot the mobile device. I think this started with the update to iOS 8. Any suggestions on how to fix?

Newsstand is a kind of folder, you press the Home button to get out like any other app.
Sorry, I wasn't sufficiently clear. When I press the Home button, Newsstand collapses to the center of the active window as expected but the home screen is not visible nor can Newsstand be pushed out of the active window. I can move it but only to the borders of the window.
Can you make a screenshot and upload it here so that we can see what's going on?
I discovered the source of my problem and the solution. It turns out that Newsstand doesn't function exactly like other apps or like other folders. I'm really extreme about maximizing battery charge so I close apps unless I know I will need then in the next several minutes or so. This means, when finished using and app, I double click the Home button and swipe the app off the top of the screen to close it. This doesn't work for Newsstand since double clicking leads to the behavior I described above. However, just a single click of the Home button closes Newsstand completely.
Great that you got it working.
Just a note about swapping apps out in multitask bar.
You do not need to do that, intact you use more battery doing it.
Most apps do not run in the background except for some navigation, music, 3rd parties' telephone apps.
