Ipad does not switch off or restart

My Ipad does not function it does not allow me to slide it to open and it also does not allow me to restart it seems as if the button could have got stuck?

iPad 2, iOS 8.1.1

Have you tried holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen?
