iPod wont charge

I've had my iPod about 2 years now and I haven't been able to get it to charge for around 6 months. It all started because I didn't use it for a couple of months so when I went back to finally charge it back up, it didn't work. I've tried to plug it into different sockets, use different cables, plug it into my Mac etc. When I plug it in, it comes up with the battery symbol with 3 red bars inside of the battery to indicate that it's charging but it just doesn't charge. As soon as I take it off charging, it goes dead.
