Import Contacts

I tried to import an old copy of my contacts into a new iCloud account on my Mac. Instead, it deleted all the contacts and left me with an empty contacts file. When I perform the import, all the contacts show as contacts, but after about a minute disappear and I am left with no contacts. How can I import the old backup file and have it remain in the file? It is an .abbu file.
