Podcast URL Problems

Hello,

I can't seem to get this podcast to redirect to our new URL.

Our old podcast is here (still in itunes store): http://www.thelambschapel.org/TLC_Audio_Podcast_v2.xml

Our new podcast is here (able to be updated in podcast): http://www.tlcalive.com/files/TLC_Alive_Audio_Podcast.xml

I did put the following in the new podcast xml file:

<atom:link href="http://www.thelambschapel.org/TLC_Audio_Podcast_v2.xml" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml"/>

<itunes:new-feed-url>http://www.tlcalive.com/files/TLC_Alive_Audio_Podcast.xml</itunes:new-feed-url>

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Billy G

Firstly, it's not a bit of good adding the 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag to the new feed - obviously iTunes cannot see that. You have to add it to the original feed.

However, your original feed is no longer at that URL. I tried accessing your new feed several times: on one occasion I was able to read it but on the others I got 'The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.'. Subscribing to it in iTunes brings it up empty. Feedvalidator says 'Not a gzipped file (Server response declares Content-Encoding: gzip; misconfigured server?)' which leads me to suspect that though the file itself is probably OK, your server is serving it as if it were a gzipped file and thus confusing anything which tries to connect to it.

That problem will have to be sorted out with the people running your server. As to the redirection, this page explains in detail how to do it, and what to do if you can no longer access the original feed:

There may be an error in the coding for the new feed - even when I can access it, and see the coding, Firefox shows it as empty, so this may be down to the above problem or it may be a further error. I can't see any obvious problem such as a stray ampersand, but it's a very long feed and I can't plough through it in detail. Once the server is behaving itself the feed can be checked at http://feedvalidator.org

So if we take off the redirect for www.thelambschapel.org that points to www.tlcalive.com will the feed pick back up in the itunes store?

I can get to the server side of the old url for the feed and put the <itunes:new-feed-url> in that xml file will that pick it up in the itunes store and redirect or is that file link to the store already broken? (can't be restored?)

I did summit the same question to podcasts@apple.com that I submitted above with no response as yet.

Also, I did check the feed at feedvalidator.org and got the following with it:

Sorry

This feed does not validate.

line 6, column 0: XML parsing error: <unknown>:6:0: unbound prefix [help]

<atom:link href=" http://www.thelambschapel.org/TLC_Audio_Podcast_v2.xml " rel ...

In addition, interoperability with the widest range of feed readers could be improved by implementing the following recommendation.

Your feed appears to be encoded as "UTF-8", but your server is reporting "US-ASCII" [help]

The iTunes Store is using the feed at http://www.thelambschapel.org/TLC_Audio_Podcast_v2.xml

This does have the correct 'itunes:new-feed-url' tag but iTunes appears not to be reading the feed - it comes up empty when subscribing. Feedvalidator flags only the atom tag, and I can't see why that would cause a problem but you should remove it - it's irrelevant. See whether that cures it and if it doesn't please post back.

This feed now appears to be OK.

If you can get the lambschapel feed readable by iTunes then subscribers will be redirected permanently to the tlcactive feed immediately, and the Store within a few days. Leave the old feed in place for a couple of weeks to give subscribers time to catch up.
