normal boot hangs, cannot invoke Safe Mode either!

After installing a device driver my macbook air rebooted, and startup hung at about 50%. No problem, I thought, I'll boot in Safe Mode and remove the driver. No joy, I have FileVault enabled so OS X won't boot into Safe Mode. Bit of a design flaw there, I think! So how do I get my MacBook working again? Thanks.
