Blue Screen only shows Internet Browser on top

My husband shut the computer off yesterday with the startup button because the computer was not responding. Then I restarted it for him and then all that came up was the internet browser. Nothing else is showing up on my desktop.....no hard drive or back up drive or dock files.

This is an older computer, but I had a new hard drive installed 3 years ago.

Also yesterday I was using disk utility to clean up the permissions. It took hours to clean it up but finally did.

HELP!

Sandy,

Locate the original install discs that came with machine and run Apple's Hardware Test in Extended Mode 2-3 times back to back. You need to run AHT multiple times because it does not always find errors after the first or second pass, however when errors are found they are correct. If it reports errors, take it n for repair. However due to the age, you may want to consider replacing it.
