170GB of Backups? !!

Perhaps a "stupid" question:

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro with 750GB SATA internal drive,

but only 90GB FREE (12%) and 170GB "Backups"!!

HUH? What/where are these backups?

I have 2 Time Capsules + SuperDuper + Carbon Copy Cloner - all on external HDs.

So what/how are there these backups?? I am psycho-blocking on how/where to look for these backups on the MBP.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), 8GB SDRAM; 750GB HD

Thank you for reply.

I have read the 2 url's cited. but am not completely satisfied. I know they say Time Machine will remove/cease making local backups under certain conditions. Why have them if they are not available (greyed out) when I enter Restore mode? 12% is getting to be low free space.

Is there not a way to stop this gizmo myself?

This has re-appeared when I found it necessary to erase both Time Capsules recently and acquire a complete new TM backup. (I had encountered this quirk before but got rid of it, reappearing with new full backup)
