Matlab doesn't recognize XQuartz

I want to run Matlab R2008b, but I get an error saying "it appears X11 is not installed."I am running OS 10.9, and have installed XQuartz. How do I get Matlab to recognize it?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
