1. Mac OS X 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard, not Lion.
2. Install more RAM in your computer. If needed, buy it from a source such as Crucial or OWC.
3. Delete files from the internal drive, putting any that you want to keep onto at least two external ones.

If you are upgrading to Yosemite, I'd add as much RAM as the computer will operate on. OWC has tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum.
