all of a sudden when I download photos into iMac they are duplicated?
As far as I know I did not change any settings but if I did, where do I go to stop the duplicating?

What can you do? Explain what you are seeing and what you have for starters
What version of iPhoto? Is OS X 10.6.8 as you state correct for your OS? Where are you seeing the duplicates? Are you importing the same photos multiple times? What is the source of theses photos?
