I want to get my files back but i've emptied the trash, what do i do?

I haven't secured my trash yet either and if I do that now what will happen? And is there any other way to get my images and videos back and not download a heap of apps? Is there anything free that actually works?

Switch the computer off at once, buy some Data Recovery software and don't switch the Mac on again until you have it.

Data Rescue 4 should be able to show you in demo mode what it can recover.
