I have been wanting to upgrade for forever but I was told if I did I may have problems with Microsoft 2011. I don't when I will upgrade the Microsoft program. Also, I was told that I would need to backup my whole computer on a external hard drive, which I don't have. I don't want to make any mistakes. Any good information is appreciated. Thanks.

It works with Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite. There are no problems using it with Yosemite.
1. Microsoft Office 2011 will run on Yosemite.
2. Buy an external drive and back your computer up. A problem could cause data loss at any time; these are particularly likely to happen while upgrading.

Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac works perfectly in the latest OSXs. I am using it on 10.10.3 and have also used it on every OS X since Snow leopard.
And you really do not a backup, not just for this, but for when your HardDrive crashes, which they all will eventually.

Where should I go for a good hard drive? I've never had one before.
Are you asking about a replacement or do you need an external drive for use in backing up? I would suggest you might start looking for either at OWC.
