Cannot copy file, file is in use

Macbook pro 13 mid 2009 with Yosemite fresh install. (i have the same problem with the old MacOSX).

When i try to copy a file, or a bunch of files, to the wdtvlivehub i have the message error "cannot copy file, the file is in use".

I try the following:

- in the wdtvlivehub activated the DNLA, WINDOWS and Itunes Server (and the linux).

- try both via wifi and ethernet

- repair permission on disk

- deactivate the show miniatures on the mac and on the wdtvlivehub

- drag & drop the file and cut e copy via keyboard or with the right click of the pad or mouse

- connect the wdtvlivehub via SMB, CIFS

- Try with AFP but i get a error message

- with an app i search for a program that block the file but it didn't find anything

-Basically i try everything suggest in this board and over the web but nothing resolve the problem.

The file sometimes been copied but i have to try a billion times....not so comfort in this.

What i have to do?

P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

If you are handy with something like Wireshark (or tcpdump) you can run a packet capture on the wire and watch the traffic with different tools. Finder can support different protocols. If it is a protocol-specific issue, you may be able to use a different one and get your files to copy.

Look under Finder -> Go -> Connect To Server.

User uploaded file

As a test try and copy the same file to a different destination on the same network via Finder. If it works, it may not be a Finder issue.

Hi,

We often see this file in use when the file has not been closed. Is it just a regular file that was opened and how did you open it? I use AppleScript to close it if it was opened with AppleScript.

Edited: try this: Run Script Editor. Enter:

set f to choose file -- select the file

close accessf

run it in Script Editor.

Like I written on the first message is an WDTVLIVEHUB.

on the web I find that is a common problem (not only with the WDTVLIVEHUB , but with other NAS (ex. Synology))

And it all started with lion (lack with the samba protocol).

update:

both mucommander and doublecommander transfer files with the speed of 3,2MB/sec instead of 9-10MB/sec. I think that there is a problem with finder about the speed of transfer or maybe with the properties of file

as i written on the first post i try about everything.

before i write this post i search both on apple and wd support forum but no one resolve this issue. Sometimes the suggestion to try in cifs or disable preview works for one file but when i try to copy another file the error represent.

I repeat what i suppose: there is a bug on finder (maybe the preview of the file - they are video file - and disable it doesn't work, or maybe how it can handle the connection...i don't know...security on the transfer o check the file integrity).

Maybe so, but you are taking about a third-party device here. It is Western Digital's responsibility to make sure their device works with Yosemite, not the other way around. There have been numerous similar threads about this device and copying issues... (not here, elsewhere on the web)... and the solution always involved doing something at the device end to fix it. Again, you need to be asking Western Digital because it's their device.

as i said i tried the smb and cifs connection (the afp doesn't work). And both in ways i have the same errors.

With my notebook with windows 7 all went well. With my desktop with windows 8.1 all went well. I pick an old pc with windows xp and the copy went great.

With osx yosemite (and as i written lion, mavericks) the copy doesn't work. Strange is that the copy interrupts at the end of the process and not when it start.

So i think is a problem with the preview of finder. But ,like i said, even though i disable it (on the wdtvlivehub or in finder or in both), it works randomly (one file copied, the next two doesn't).

Like i said with mucommander and double commander (two files manager) all goes well.

i don't think so.

If you read on the web not only the wdtv but many other nas owner had problem from lion to yosemite.

Most of them said that is the new smb protocol that affect the transfer of files. Other suggest to disable the preview. Still nothing of this works (works sometimes but not always).

So ,as i written in the message above, if a system with windows (from xp to 8.1) works, i think is a yosemite (and lion and mavericks) problem. Specifically is a finder bug in some ways (the preview, the smb protocol...i don't know) expecially when two programs (mucommander and double commander - two files manager) succeed on the same OSX.

wait wait wait maybe i found the culprit.

during the thousand test 😉 i make, i created an other administrator account.

In this account i notice that the movie file are associated with quicktime while in the other account they are associated with mplayerx (a player that can play almost evevrything and with subs).

So i try to copy over 1,8 GB of video e subs file to the WDtv and all goes well.

So.....do you have any suggestion to which player i must download (no vlc and no mplayerx)? 😉

Thanks for you patience and i hope this may help someone else

This implies that mPlayerX is not closing the file properly. You can raise a bug with the VLC/mPlayer development teams. Quicktime does not support srt files.
