Q: Unable to factory reset or update software

My 2.5 year old iPhone 5 (64GB) turned itself off, and all it does now is show the white apple screen, black out, and flash the white apple screen, over and over again.

When I do a hard reset, it shows the "connect to iTunes" screen.  From the latest version iTunes, it says that I need to update to iOS 8.1.3, but my iPhone blanks out in the middle of the update, disconnecting from the computer.  It does the same thing when I try to do a factory reset.  It goes as far as the white apple screen with the progress bar underneath the apple logo, before blacking out.

I'm seeing mostly error code 4013.

A few days before this total crash, my phone was crashing, but still able to restart.  The majority of the time it was when I opened the facebook app.

5 months ago, I had my iPhone's battery replaced for free under the Apple Battery Replacement Program.

How can I fix my phone?  Please help!

    Hi there chelicerael,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like your iPhone 5 was restarting unexpectedly, so you tried to restore it with iTunes and ran into a ‘4013’ alert message. Take a look at the article below which provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that should help you resolve the issue with your iPhone.

iOS: Restore errors 4005, 4013, and 4014 - Apple Support

    Take care,

    -Jason

Hi Jason, none of the suggestions helped, and I took my iPhone into the Apple Store.  The technician says that it's the docking station that is the problem.

However, a local iPhone repair store told me that it's probably the battery that went bad (again), and that I should go back to the Apple store to get it replaced since it's still under warranty.

In your opinion, do you think that the battery is the problem?
