Q: Find my phone setup for my children

HI

Hope ope this is the right forum. If not could an administrator move it please?

i am setting up an old family IPhone 3GS for use by my daughter.

I Am starting off by actuating many of the settings in RESTRICTIONS until she gets up and running Safely.

The reason for writing this message is because Find My Phone is not working, and I would like to clarify  a couple of issues:

  1. AM I correct in thinking that if Data Roaming is turned off, Find My Phone will only work when she deliberately links to a WIFI network. I.e. It is not enough to simply leave Wfi on.
  2. She is currently using a PAYG card which offers free texts to other members of GiffGaff  - such as some of the family.

IIf she should run out of credit I would like to know if that stops Find My Phone from functioning.

3.  I guess  the bottom line is 'how does Find My phone' function ?  I guess it's not by GPS?

I Really would appreciate some answers - maybe others have had the same issue with their kids too.

THanks

iPhone 3GS

    1. No Data roaming refers to connecting to the cellular data network when outside of the coverage area for your carrier. e.g. if you travel to another country for the weekend and your carrier does not provide service there, you can roam onto a foreign network to make calls and use data (if your plan allows this). Data roaming charges can be very high. Turning off data roaming will prevent the device from using cellular data while roaming onto a different carrier's network.

    2. Find my iPhone requires a data connection, whether cellular or WiFi. If the device is not connected to WiFi and she runs out of credit to the point where cellular data stops working, then Find my iPhone will not be able to locate the phone.

    3. Find my iPhone locates the device by use of cellular and WiFi signal triangulation (Assisted GPS).

Just to clarify, Assisted GPS does use GPS. It uses cellular and WiFi to get a location faster than GPS alone.

Meg is correct. Note, however, that if there is no data connection, it doesn't really matter so far as FMiP is concerned... it can't report its location.
