I have the typical trouble w OS 10.10.1

Internet connection slow

Slow, sluggish computer

Permissions need to be constantly verified and repaired

Dowloads don't always complete - especially the stand-alone 10.10.2 upgrade - I've tried 16 time to download and tried also the iTunes combo that would at least finish downloading, but would give an error when opened - 'checksum invalid' 'could not be verified - file has been tampered with or could be corrupt'.

I upgraded RAM, and that helped, but I expect with 20 GB RAM to never see the spinning wheel of death.

What I expect - a stable OS that doesn't affect download speed, or the stability of connections. Also, no spinning wheel of death.

Below is the output of the EtreCheck2 results

_______________________________________

Problem description:

The iMac won’t finish downloading the 10.10.2 upgrade.

Receive ‘invalid checksum’ ‘could not be verified - tampered or corrupt file’ w combo upgrade - forget the std upgrade as I’ve tried to download over 16 times.

Computer is slow at times and has difficulty responding and takes a long time to reboot.

RAM is more than sufficient @ 20 GB.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Uninstall CocktaiL by following the developer's instructions or use their uninstaller.

EtreCheck doesn't really tell us anything on its own. We can see known bad actors, but that doesn't mean they are causing your problems.

You need to monitor Activity Monitor for high cpu od memory usage, and wat he the Console log for any repeating failure messages.

When your internet is slow, does it take a while to start loading, then speed up or is it always slow?

Do you have the ability to check on a different network using WiFi or Ethernet?

Repairing permissions is one of the biggest wastes of time you can engage in. Unless you are having file access issues, you permissions aren't the problem. Also, while it reports that it finds things and repairs them, it really doesn't because they are not wrong or broken. They have just changed from when the original checking database was created. It notes that they differ, and the. Incorrectly states the it has repaired them.

I think VirtualBox needs to be updated, but it wouldn't be the source of the problems you are seeing.

I Can't remeber if that version is compatible or not.

Mar 8, 2015 10:59 AM in response to Barney-15E

So I uninstalled Cocktail successfully. The background to installing it is that I was trying to download Onyx but the dmg file would not open. I tried to download the new version of VirtualBox so I could uninstall the old version as I couldn't open the old version because its not compatible with OSX - same thing as Onyx - data corrupted (dmg file).

Could this be related to the problems I'm having installing the 10.10.2 version of OSX?

This is last few lines of Console that I think show the disk image trying to open(?):

I tried doing a pastbin.com link to the whole Console log so I didn't pollute the text, but the file was too big for the free account, so if there's other Console info that may help, please let me know.

Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

We have wifi in the house, and on the whole part, the wifi is stable and predictable, so I feel that the internet issues are on the iMac.

As I was typing this I had another freezing event. According to the Activity log, the Shockwave Flash was not responding.

Here is the log carried on from the last entry from the above:

Why are there all the URL for various sites in the above log?

Here are the results of the EtreCheck2 I did while logged in as a guest, but before starting in safe mode.

Probably one or more of the following is going on:

1) One or more of your system modifications is incompatible with Yosemite

2) Your filesystem is corrupted

3) Your hard drive is failing

I suggest the following. At every stage, you can stop and see how it runs and then decide if you want to proceed to the next step.

1) Boot into your recovery volume and repair your hard disk

2) Try uninstalling what you can. I know you have said that isn't working, so you may need to go to

3) Use the recovery volume to reinstall OS X

4) Use the recovery volume to erase your startup disk and then reinstall OS X. When you restore from backup, only restore user documents, not applications. Then you can make sure to install the latest version of each software.

5) Have your hard drive replaced. If you hard drive does need to be replaced, chances are that step 3 and/or 4 will fail.
