Logic Pro X possible fake?

I bought Logic Pro X online from Ebay. I realize that that was probably dumb but I can't afford the 199 right now so I was looking for it at a cheaper price. That being said I was sent the software and installed it but it is not recognized by the app store or anything. I am assuming that it is because you need to actually download it from the app store. However I installed it and it seemed like it was a normal version. I was wondering if there is way to tell if it is fake or if there is a way to connect it to my app store account so I can get updates.

ANY version of Logic X NOT purchased through the app store is illegal.

It's incredulous that people can afford expensive computers and then think that Logic, or any other professional software is too expensive. I paid $999 for Logic when it was being sold by emagic, the original owners/developers. When Apple purchased it they reduced the price to $499 and removed the copy protection. Now it sells for $199, an unbelievable deal and still, people think it's too expensive.

And because Apple removed the copy protection it's pirated like mad, Apple doesn't seem to care though as a Mac is the new Logic dongle.

You will not be able to upgrade the software as no sale is attached to your Apple ID.

p.s. I don't mean to rag or blame you, you've asked a legitimate question and unfortunately for those who've invested a lot in Logic over the years, it's a shame to see it pirated. There's many on this board using illegal copies and know it, at least you asked.

Do the pirates hide viruses in these copies, viruses that may require restore of the backup prior to the LogicPro install?

Not really sure but I think Logic-X is a stand-alone install.

Someone on the Logic board asked how to keep a hard-copy version for a reinstall without downloading from the app store. Instructions were given where the application is downloaded onto the hard drive prior to install. All one needs to do is know the location of the app store download and you can copy to a new location on the hard drive and you have a stand-alone install, this is probably what people are selling.

Yes I know that it's cheaper than it has been, just don't have the money now. I realize it was stupid. But I know there is a policy with eBay about selling pirated stuff. Wasn't sure if people were selling legit copies or not and if there was anyway to tell. I guess I should ask for a refund and report them then?

If you could get a refund that would be great, but I doubt it. Is it the original version 10.0 or one of the incremental upgrades?

Yes, he will will give you the runaround as he is lying. unfortunately he cannot activate it for you. If he bought it from apple he would have to have bought it with his (or a) Apple ID, either way this wouldn't be your Apple ID. Once software is bought from the app store it is linked to that and only that Apple ID. It cannot be transferred.

like pancenter says, the guy probably got the download installer from the hidden App Store download location. Either that or from a torrent site. I hope you didn't pay too much for it and perhaps you could post the guys eBay address? If you paid through PayPal you may have some protection. By coming here you have somewhat proved you have made an honest mistake and have been conned by a not very nice person. Even more reason to post their eBay name so that others might avoid them.

hope you get your money back and can tuck it away until you have enough to get it from the App Store.

in answer to the poster asking about viruses, the answer is yes, possibly. You can hide a virus in the header data of a JPEG. So it is a possibility. My guess is that the eBay seller is just out to make as many sales as possible before enough complaints come in to shut them down.

I started when the studio I worked at moved to logic 3.5 from cubase.

6 was the first version I owned personally, hence the box. Forgot how heavy they were with the manuals. I'll hhave to look to see if I have the manual for 3 knocking around. It's the sort of thing I'd keep when the studio owner upgraded and would throw things out.
