Have to reset PRAM on every reboot. Help

Hello,

I have a new to me Mac Pro 3,1. I did a fresh install of Yosemite. I'm having a big issue. Every time I restart the machine, it boots to a blank grey screen. Then I have to reset the pram and it boots into the OS X Utility. When I select the correct partition it boots correctly.

Everything operates correctly when it's booted up. I'm going to replace the system battery to see if that's why it's not holding the information.

The hard drive does pass smart status.

Any ideas? I'm out of ideas.

Thanks,

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), Mac Pro 3,1

Have you set the startup disk in Startup Disk preferences? Give that a try.

Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup

That it sometimes boots into the Recovery HD suggests there is a problem with the system installation on the startup volume. Perhaps you might consider erasing the drive and reinstalling from scratch and remove everything that came from the previous owner. This is something you should do.

Install OS X Using Internet Recovery

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.

Partition and Format the hard drive:

  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
  3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

If you are not able to perform an Internet Recovery with such an old model, then you must first reinstall Snow Leopard for which you will need the retail Snow Leopard DVD:

You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store:Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.

After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

With Snow Leopard installed you can download Yosemite from the App Store and install it.
