Q: Apple mobile device service failed to start

Please help!!!

 

About a month ago I did the usual update to iTunes. From then my itunes is dead. The update wouldn't complete so I uninstalled a reinstalled and now I get the message 'Service 'Apple Mobile Device Service' (Apple Mobile Device Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.'

 

I've done all windows updates on my machine, uninstalled everything to do with apple via control panel, checked I'm in administrator which I am as I only have one account, gone into services and stopped and tried to re start which comes with a new error called 1053 saying it can't start. I've tried turning off my anti virus and installing and turning off and on again. Nothing is working! I don't have an iphone so don't even need stupid mobile me. But I did use itunes for my ipod and my main music player so I'm going mad.

 

I can't call apple support without being charged £25 even though it's their update that messed it all up!

 

Any help much appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

     

    I understand that an update you were running on iTunes with your Windows computer failed to complete and you could no longer open iTunes. I understand that you attempted to remove and reinstall iTunes as well to troubleshoot. When removing iTunes from Windows, iTunes along with all of its components must be removed in the correct order or there may be unintended affects. I would first suggest removing and reinstalling iTunes in the order described in the attached article. If you have already done this, or if the issue continues, please let me know. 

     

    Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support

     

    Steps

     

    1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel.

      Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order. Then restart your computer.

      1. iTunes
      2. Apple Software Update
      3. Apple Mobile Device Support
      4. Bonjour
      5. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
        On some systems, iTunes might install two versions of Apple Application Support. This is expected. If both are present, be sure to uninstall both versions.

      Don't uninstall these components in a different order, or only uninstall some of them. Doing so might have unintended affects.

    Hi Joe,

     

    I've just tried this and it still came up with the same error message. I clicked ignore then it continued then I got error 7 message. Please help it's driving me mad!

    I understand that you are seeing “error 7” on your Windows computer after reinstalling iTunes. To troubleshoot further when seeing this error, please use the troubleshooting steps in the next attached article.

    Try the "for older video cards" version...

     

     

     

    For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

     

    The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

     

    The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

     

     

    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

    As well as the above error during install I was getting the 'error 7 / Windows 193' error so have been chasing that down, with none of the suggested fixes working. I persisted because the Error 7 seemed more important than the 'mobile device' error.

     

    What HAS just gotten iTunes running again was the " try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) " tip above.

    (I didn't think I had an older card, but there you go)

    Same here with my laptop. I guess 4 yrs is old, apple is really beginning to p#$%^s me off.

    This is the second time since Febr. update I am going thru this hassle, nevr updating this piece of xxx again

    Given your recent experience I would avoid letting iTunes update automatically next time. First there may be no need to update if the new release doesn't offer new features you want, or fix bugs that affect you. When you do chose to update it would be best to manually download from the iTunes Windows (64-bit — for older video cards) page. It may take a day or two after each release of the updated iTunes6464Setup file before the new iTunes64Setup is posted.

    Yes I know, I guess they caught me in a weak moment the other day when the update hit.....

    Anyway have been at it for over 2 hours now trying to delete/uninstall per instructions and reboot etc. first re-install failed again, I guess Apple does not fully understand the term "ABORT", during the install the first error pops up and give you several options "Abort" being one of them and even when clicking that it continues to fully install iTunes...........so now uninstalling the **** thing as we speak for the second time and then try one last time.  If not works I'm sooo done.
