Q: Cannot get successful backup of iPad to MacBook Pro

i have a 64 Gb iPad, a new 128gb iPad Air, and a MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz Intel. 64gb ipad (ipad1) suffers from space issues, thus the upgrade. All three machines are updated to latest OS and iTunes. So, I want to back it. Up, and put everything on the new iPad (ipad2).

ipad1 has a photo library with just shy of 28,000 photos 20+Gb, my artworks. Directly connected to MacBook, backup fails with "Backup failed because iPad disconnected" which is obviously untrue because iTunes WiFi Backup is disabled and there is a USB cable connecting the two machines.

I Suspect the problem is dealing with 28,000 photos, which puts me in a bad place. I have tried everything I can think of, and everything Apple Support has suggested. Though Support says they never had another user with that many photos, they never outright admitted that backup couldn't handle it. IPhoto won't even mount the iPad, probably because of the library size.

Bottom line, I need to get 28,000 photos moved from ipad1 to ipad2, and backed up on Mac, preferably with folder structure intact. No 3rd party tool I have found can handle that many photos, and most insist on breaking it into 200 photo bundles or so, which is untenable.

ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I cannot afford any expensive options.

iPad, iOS 8.1.3

Sorry. I have no idea how my user name became "IWantToKillYou" but considering that this problem has been ongoing for a month now, I suppose I could have done that somehow on a previous visit to support for answers. In case it isn't obvious, this has me frustrated and very angry.
