iPhoto/Mac losing all modifications with iCloud Photo Library activated on iOS

A few weeks ago I turned on 'iCloud Photo Library (Beta)' on my iPhone and iPad. Hence I can see all my photos - including modifications made - on the other device, or on my Mac via 'iCloud Photos (Beta)'. So far so good. 🙂

However, when I import those photos into iPhoto on my iMac (as a backup, while Apple's 'Photos' is still beta), I run into an issue: iPhoto imports only the original photos! None of my modifications are transferred! Photos I deleted on an iOS device still show up and import to iPhoto! Is that normal behavior?

I then even tried to download my photos from 'iCloud Photos (Beta)' and drag them into iPhoto - but this way locations and even dates got lost!! 😟 Well, I guess that's why it's called Beta ...

Does anybody have a suggestion on how to import photos from iPhone into iPhoto on Mac while properly maintaining all modifications made on iPhone? Or is this not possible?

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't say anything about this. Or at least I didn't find any hint on the web.

Apple suggest to mail the photos (that is tedious, I know, but even Apple has no better solution).

See this Support document: iPhoto and Aperture don't have edits to photos you import from iOS 8 devices

Or simply wait with importing to your Mac, until Photos for Mac is available. The new Photos.app, soon to be released, will understand the format that Photos iOS is using to store the edits.
