Q: What's happening here: iCloud Photos preparing photos for 'Photos' app?

This morning I came back from a weekend trip to Prague, where I took a number of photos with my iPhone 6. On my Mac I fired up iCloud Photos to see if everything was imported properly. That was about an hour ago. Since then I am presented with this screen, saying something like:

"Welcome to Photos app.

With Photos app you may save your whole iCloud Photo Library ...

Preparing photos ... This may take a few minutes.

... will be continued when you leave iCloud.com."

However, with Yosemite 10.10.2 I don't have the new Photos app for Mac on my iMac!

Now what is happening here?

Some of Apple's servers are now officially listed as down on the System Status Page:   Apple - Support - System Status

    Thanks for the info @léonie.

I have been able to log in to iCloud.com today. However, now when I try to open iCloud Photos, I get an error message saying something like "Photos not accessible, an error has occurred". Seems like Apple is again living up to their reputation about not getting cloud services together and to run them reliably and properly. I really wonder if I should rely on it to store precious photos. Ok, but then ... I know it's still beta.

Ah, and it seems as if the issue of iCloud and iTunes being down starts to be discussed on the web.

And yes, my iTunes is now affected, too ...

Has anyone gotten an answer to why Photos keeps saying "Preparing your library..." Mine has been doing this for at least a couple weeks!!!

Same problem here from weeks, I don't know what to do! I tried everything. I thought I was the only one with this problem.

My iPhone and iPad are always "Downloading 1 photo", but "it works"...

No answer yet. Apple Support has handed over my account to the "engineers" to look at.  Hopefully I get some kind of answer in the next few days.  Will pass it on if and when I do.

My advice is that you make a backup of the library on another cloud service or via cable to your computer. I'm scared that Apple resets the iCloud Library and all our "local/physical" photos get deleted...

Yes, that's exactly what I'd recommend too. I've set up Google+ to auto-upload copies of my iPhone photo library. Working flawlessly up to now and gives me that extra peace of mind.

More so, as it's not easily possible to sync all those edited photos to iPhoto on my Mac for backup purposes.

Same here. Sync from MacBook via Photos app, iPad and iPhone working great. I have the same "Preparing...." spinning timer of death on my iCloud.com Photos app. I called Apple today and they suggested to sign out of all devices of iCloud then back in. Will have to try that at a later time when i know i have a second copy/backup of my ~150GB library.

My authoritative source of Photos will remain my system photos library on my MacBook harddrive. I have that backing up to an External HD and TimeCapsule plus i have extra off-site backups. That said i may blow away my entire iCloud photo library setup on all devices and turn it on from scratch. This is a new problem. I previously had no issues under the developer profile preview.

I think my problem is with some "ghost" albums. If I disable iCloud Photo Library and then I delete all my local photos I can see in General > Settings > Information that I still have 6 photos on the iDevice. When I connect my iPad or IPhone to my computer using a third party software called itools I can see 2 empty albums (Afterlight and Instagram) saying that it has some photos inside but they are empty when I open them.

I think it's a sync problem with third party app's albums. I saw some error messages in my devices's syslog (using Linux) that said that "could not write a 0 size jpg" or something like that. I'll will post them later.

If you have "Ghost" photos, see this post:  Phantom photos are a recent new problem:

Have a look at this solution:  There are apparently more users suffering from phantom photos that cannot be deleted:  Changing the date makes the photos in "Recently deleted" visible again:

I managed to get rid of the phantom usage. Restoring iPhone and resetting the phone settings/data do not work for me.

I had to move the Date on my phone earlier by 1,2,3 months and found the phantom photos in the Recently Deleted Folder. Next, I deleted the photos manually from the Recently Deleted Folder and the usage got freed up from my iPhone.

I have been having the same issue for several days now, I had originally converted my iPhotos library to Photos with a developers build and then subsequently uploaded my entire library to the cloud. Throughout the entire process, I noticed duplicates and sometimes triplicates of all my photos across all my devices. I must have deleted over 40 gbs of duplicates, and they keep reappearing across all the devices and re-duplicating.

Once Photos is fully functional, it will seem to provide the best solution for seamless integration between the cloud and all my devices.

I put the order to downgrade my icloud storage and just play around with Flikr's free terabyte service.

Four days later ... and iCloud Photos is working again.

However, I don't see anything has changed. Was a rather long hiccup this time.

It's back up for me too.  Hopefully it's fixed for everyone.

How large was your library? Mine has been stuck for almost a week now.
