Using my first generation Ipad as an Ereader

I was recently given a first generation ipad to use as an ereader. I have been trying to download apps so that I can read epubs and pdfs on the ipad but nothing seems to be working. It keeps saying that I need to update my iOS but the one that I on the ipad is as high as the first gen will go. Even going from my laptop to the ipad doesn't work. What apps could I download to read epubs? How do I get my ipad to work?

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

There is the iBooks app, you can read ibooks from Apple on it and epubs that don't have digital-rights-management on them. Download the app on your computer's iTunes so that it's in your purchase history, and then on your iPad you should be able to download a compatible version via the Purchased tab in the App Store app. That might, if the app's developer supports it, work with other ebooks apps as well

To get epubs to the app, add them to your computer's iTunes library via File > Add To Library, or if using a Mac with Mavericks or Yosemite on it add them to its iBooks app. And then use the iPad's Books tab in your computer's iTunes to select and sync them to it.

You've downloaded the current version of iBooks on your computer's iTunes ?

If you can't then download the it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your iPad then try closing the App Store app via the iPad's taskbar and then retry going to the Purchased tab in it : from the home screen (i.e. not with the App Store app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the App Store app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

You could also do a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

You won't be able to sync it from your computer's iTunes as that is the current version of the app, which requires iOS 7+

It's definitely a first gen iPad, it doesn't have any cameras on it ? When I try it on an an old iPod Touch with iOS 6 on it (I don't have an iPad with iOS 5.1.1 on it to check) I get the following popup in the Purchased tab in its App Store app when trying to download it :
