Target Disk mode and Target Display mode aren’t the same thing, but the answer is ‘Yes’ for both.

I tried this recently with a MacBook Air, and it did not work—and confirmed by Apple Store reps.
As stated in question 4 of the article I linked to, the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) can’t go into Target Display mode. The other iMac models listed in the table will.
