Q: may have a virus

may have a virus or malware. when i open safari i get a pop up saying to call 844-261-6418. it wont let me navigate away from this page and the only way to get out of this is to shut down safari. Help please?

That is not a virus.

It is a scam.

Don't under any circumstance call that number.

You can try shutting down Safari and then when you restart it hold down the shift key to see if that stops it.

If it doesn't disconnect you Mac from the web and then restart Safari then.

Do not call the number.
Force quit Safari, then restart Safari while holding the Shift key.

Awesome. Knew it was either a scam or virus, but knew too not to call the number. Was concern I would have have to uninstall and reinstall Safari, BUT your little trick worked perfectly. Great answer and thank you!
