Q: Purchased items wont sync to new laptop

Hi

I recently bought a new laptop, but when I select File>Devices>Transfer, no content is transferred to my new iTunes library.  I dont have a backup from the old laptop (I know, my fault) unfortunately.

All the help I can find points to the above, but no luck with that so far.

Anybody got any alternative solutions?

thanks

    Hi dstelling,

It seems you are unable to transfer purchases. Just so we're on the same page, are you attempting to transfer content from an iPod Classic? You may want to try authorizing the new computer before trying to transfer data from an iPod to your new library:

Authorize your computer in iTunes - Apple Support

If you are still having issues syncing, you can always download past purchases by following the steps in this article:

Download past purchases - Apple Support

Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

    Take care,

    Hi,

Thanks for the advice, but I still cant seem to get it to synch.  I cant actually find the Setings tab mentioned in the second article you attached.  Perhaps this is on IOS only?  I've tried a whole load of authorise / deauthorise stuff, all to no avail.  What I have noticed is that when I select File > Devices > Transfer purchases, the iPod shows as connected for less than 5 seconds before progressing to "Safe to disconnect".  This suggests that possibly the problem is on the iPod itself?  Are there any settings I need to check on there?  This is backed up by the fact that the iPod also isnt synching the free U2 album (the only thing showing in my library at present)

Perhaps should have also pointed out that this is on Windows 8, with a 160Gb iPod Classic.  Concerned that I'm going to lose all my purchased content, which amounts to well over 1000 songs.

    dstelling,

To download past purchases on your PC, you can follow these steps:

Download past purchases - Apple Support

Download previous purchases on Mac or PC

Make sure your Mac or PC meets these system requirements:

    • iTunes 10.3 or later
You need iTunes 10.6 or later to download previously purchased movies and TV shows.
    • iTunes account in a country where iTunes in the Cloud is available

    iTunes Store

    1. Open iTunes and go to the iTunes Store.
    2. Click Purchased in the Quick Links section.
    3. Select the content type that you want to download (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Apps, or Books).
    4. Select Not in My Library to view purchased content that isn't on your computer.
    5. Find the item that you want to download. You can browse using the menu to the left. If you have more than 2,000 songs, you'll see Recent Purchases instead of All Songs or Albums.
    6. Click the Download  icon next to the item you want to download.
If an item is already in your library, the Download icon won't appear.

Same problem.  It only displays the U2 album.  Over the years, I've bought about 1200 songs, so obviously keen to get this sorted
