Wow! That definitely sounds frustrating. If the content disappeared after updating, chances are that it still resides on your computer and iTunes has just lost “communication” with the files. Check out the steps in the following resource to see if they provide a solution:

I'm not quite sure exactly what I did, but I've somehow managed to find a back-up from 6 months ago which is better than it sounds (otherwise I was looking at Feb 14 as my last one).
