Apple TV (latest version) connected to network via ethernet but will not connect to my iMac or airplay my iPad.

That will be an issue with how the network is setup, likely treating wired and wireless as separate networks.

Yes - that turned out to be the problem. Once I went back to WiFi for Apple TV3 everything flew together.
