GTX 650 black screen on Mac Pro 2008

I have been using an EVGA GTX 650 ti 2gb *PC* video card in my 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 for over a year. The boot screen is never visible (as we all know) but beyond that the pc video card has been working well. However, after upgrading from Yosemite 10.10.1 to 10.10.2 and updating to the latest Nvidia mac driver, my apple cinema display now stays black, i.e., no picture. I had to put my old ATI 2600 back in for now. Does anyone know if it's possible to get the 650 working in my mac again and what I could try?

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), gtx 650 nvidia pc video card

Do a safe boot and uninstall the Nvidia so that you are back to Apple only drivers.

Also the new security update will mess up Nvidia's drivers (what's with "security update" playing with OS X build number? but that is what it does and Nvidia looks for a particular build)
