delete the Contact app, how is this possible?

both my ios devices show my contacts app as installing, waiting for the download to start. like they were normal apps, not one of apples.

If I tap and hold on the app, it lets me delete it. I did this on the iPhone after doing a phone restore did not fix the issue. I know everyone says it can't be done because it's an apple app, but I did. I got the warning about deleting this app will delete it's information, etc... I went ahead with it as nothing else has worked up to this point. (and yes, the apps that rely on the data still have access to that data it seems)

my question is two fold, how is this possible? And how do I get it back?

thanks

jason

Trust me, this is NOT an app downloaded from the App Store. i put all my 'apple' apps together in one folder by group/type. Nothing else goes in those folders. And it had the icon of the contacts app. It was also the only one of those to show a "waiting..." And icon greyed out like the App Store was trying to update it.

I get no results in a spotlight search. Tried that Before I posted.

I have had iOS devices for many years, ipad from day 1! so I know this is truly the contacts app from apple and thus I am truly perplexed that it let me do this.

any more thoughts or ideas?.

thanks

jason

p.s. Same thing is happening on my iPad, here is the screen shot of the folder with the contacts icon saying waiting. I verified in the iPhone users guide that this definitely the icon for the apple contacts app. Saying waiting, not contacts.

Update, i did everything i could think of to fix this and kept getting the same result, a non-funcitonal but deletable app called contacts with the proper icon and name.

I stopped posting on this topic because no matter where I posted I kept getting the "thats impossible" responses, all assuming i jailbroke, or installed another program called contacts, etc...

I demo'd it for some people at work and they all saw and said the same thing "Thats not supposed to happen, not supposed to be possible." I searched the phone for "contact" and no apps showed up.

Up to this point if I ran a point upgrade I would get a frosted looking contacts saying it was waiting to load (screenshots above). And I could tap-hold and then delete. I tested and found that the underlying DB was safe if i deleted the app, so i went that route and just utilized my mac for updates I might normally do on my ipad or iphone.

It appears somewhere some engineer at apple fixed something in 8.3 because this time when I updated, it didnt give me the greyed out icon, but a fresh new icon and running app, undeletable.

Thanks for all your input,

Jason

and I just figured out that there is some combination of circumstances that I can delete it. Go figure.

And what would those combination of circumstances be? Unless the "combination of circumstances" is that you jailbroke your phone, you are the first person to have discovered them. It would be useful for the rest of us to understand.

Best of luck.

Nope, never jailboroken an iOS device. Dont even know how. All original devices, not one was bought used, all bought from apple or AT&T in teh packages.

I noticed it after I updated software to 8.1.6 i think it was. Just upgraded to 8.2 and it was still there, so I threw caution to the wind to get one more piece of data, and tried the X to delete that I noticed a few days ago was present when I did the tap-hold action.

About an hour later, i noticed that there was a new default grey icon that says waiting underneath it. I did not do any more installs after my restore and upgrade to 8.2 last night. It appeared on its own.

I dont know what they are. I updated to 8.1.6 i think it was. I dont know for sure, because i usually dont add people to contacts very often, and only use the in app interface in email or messaging.

Went to go look at something, looked at the app. The color was greyed out, i thought maybe a new icon? darker from the last update? Apple does that kind of thing sometimes, change icons shading. nope, wont start. When i clicked on it, it went from saying "Contacts" to "Waiting..."

This happened on BOTH my ipad adn iphone now. neither jailbroken, both new, not used.

I restored the iphone last night from a itunes backup, upgraded to 8.2 and it was still there, just waiting...

please see post below for steps after that, that i took.
