How deep is my trouble?

i Have for some time had troubles with slow function. Mega issues with trying to use QGIS. Then just the other day my mac pro started to lock up. I have spent the last 2 days trying find out what's wrong. I found a remedy for decreased performance after install of Yosemite. safe mode start n disk repair etc. so I have just been looking through and discovered "_dayliteserver" in my user list and have no idea how or when it got there. I immediately deleted it and again my pro began locking up. I have now disconnected from Internet.

how deep are my trouble?

it is both a work and private use.

i Don't know how to backup my data.

Never manually delete files. You should always use a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. If you don't know how to remove something before installing, don't install it.

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

If you aren't backing up now, that should be your first priority. Buy an external hard drive about three times as large as your current hard drive. A 1 TB external drive should be sufficient. 2 TB would be better. Plug it in and turn on Time Machine. When that is complete then you can engage in some debugging with other Apple Support Communities.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

TThank you for yr prompt response. Just so happens I recently purchased a WD 2T Passport Ultra. Never imagined I'd use it this quik. It's backing up 133.49GB. When complete I will run the diagnostic & post. Only deleted the unknown user mentione. Back up looks to take a few hours. Will Remain off Internet until I down load diagnostic program.

There may be other issues, but the problem is caused at least in part by "Daylite Server." You should either reinstall it, remove it, or refer to its developer for support.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

A Lot to take in. I have no idea how it got there. My laptop has been turned off, unplugged in its bag in storage for a month while I was away. Less than 2 weeks prior to my leaving I added our business as a seperate user in anticipation for separating work and private when I got back so it has yet to be used. The user dayliteserver was not there then. I saw no program icon of that name displayed either. I am very careful, never open an email I don't know etc. I am baffled.

thank for your input. Still backing up.

Use one of those "Click for support" links to take you to Daylite's support page. From there you should be able to find uninstallation instructions. Once it is removed, see if your Mac is still performing poorly. If so, post a new EtreCheck report and we will take a closer look. At this point, things look good aside from the Daylite software. When you have something like this that is a very likely cause for your problems, and there isn't anything else obvious, the best idea is to remove it. That might not fix the problem, but it will eliminate the strongest candidate.

Locate and delete the following files:

  1. if you want to remove those files go into terminal type cd / then press enter

  2. then cd Library and press enter

  3. then cd StartupItems press enter

  4. now use sudo rm -rf HWNetMgr press enter then it will prompt you to enter your password. enter it then if want to remove HWPortDetect

  5. uso sudo again and same code sudo rm -rf HWPortDetect press enter and wallah they are gone...
