You can update to Osx 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion for 19.99. Or Update directly to 10.10 Yosemite for Free.

For Lion and Mountain Lion you would need to buy the update code from the Apple Store here:

Once you get the email with the download code, you can redeem it in the Mac App Store App which should be on your Dock and initiate the update.

Alternatively, you can update Directly to Yosemite for Free from the Mac App Store App.

If you saw no difference, then you did not update anything. Yosemite is quite different to Snow Leopard.

If About this Mac still states OSx 10.6.8 then you did not update at all.

The Update is pretty large, so it will take a while to download before it starts to update.

Then its either not finished Downloaded or never started at all.

Do you see something currently downloading in your Downloads folder?\

If you don't go back to the Mac App Store App, and click on the Yosemite update there again.

From the following link:

3. Upgrade to OS X Yosemite for free.

Visit the OS X Yosemite page on the Mac App Store. Click the download button, and follow the onscreen instructions to begin your upgrade. If you don’t have broadband access, you can upgrade your Mac at any Apple Retail Store.

You may want to take it in to an Apple Store and have the update it for you. It should be a free service.
