Macbook Pro 13 Retina Native resolution wrong?

I have a question about my macbook's display settings. There is default and scaled?

The default was everything enlarged and content taking up too much space; then I changed it to scaled -> more space and everything looks amazing, crisp and smooth. Is this the correct setting for retina and why wasn't it the default setting out of the box?

This article will probably explain it better than me: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6023/the-nextgen-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-r eview/6

Basically, the default resolution of 1280x800 is actually 2560x1600 which is then scaled down by OS X, so you get more pixels in the 1280x800 resolution than you would on a regular non-retina Macbook.

When you scale up for more space it's the same mechanism, but the higher you scale the less pixel density you get since it's always 2560x1600 being scaled down (to 1440x900 or 1680x1050 in that case). But I had also found that I don't notice a loss of picture quality in the 1440x900 and 1680x1050 modes.
