Q: email issues since security update

Today I installed the latest security update 2015 -002

I have 4 accounts in Mac Mail and 3 of them have disappeared from preferences/accounts. My icloud account had to be re registered.

The odd thing though is that whilst I cannot receive mail or in the 3 accounts the old emails are all still there set up as before. Also when I open mail up I still get the message the identity of "mail.$$$$$$.com" cannot be verified" and it asks me to cancel or connect. I also get this message for my other pop account. If I connect I still don't get emails and they are still not listed in mail/preferences/accounts

I have re set up two of the 3 missing accounts. one seems to be working fine the other not so. Though not sure if that is to do with the way I set it up.

If I go to mail and instead of going to preferences/accounts go straight to Accounts the accounts all seem to be listed under internet accounts, but the one that I have not re set up is not receiving mail or allowing me to send from that account.

Any ideas how to remove this security update as it seems to be a real problem

You could restore from a backup, but from what I have read, this security update is for a major vulnerability, so I would recommend trying to get Mail straightened out.

Back up all data. Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the Keychain box. You'll be prompted to delete the local iCloud keychain. Confirm—the data will remain on the servers. Then re-check the box. Follow one of the procedures described in this support article to set up iCloud Keychain on an additional device. Test.

I have re set up most of my accounts and they seem to be working intermittently.

Currently the gmail one cannot send out emails but was earlier. I don't know why there it is not now.

I am getting the message cannot send mail using the server smtp.gmail.com and then it says the sender was rejected by smtp.gmail.com. The server response was authentication required.

I haven't changed any settings it worked earlier when i first re set it up and now its not.

When you say back up my data - do you mean do a whole time machine back up?

What exactly is the keychain and why has the update affected it.

Will I still have to re add the missing email account that is actually there but doesn't appear in my preferences/accounts?

Also another thing I have noticed is that one of the accounts which i have managed to get working is not appearing in the sent folder. I can send and receive messages but they are not appearing in the sent folder.

But if I search that address in the sent folder they all appear. As soon as I remove it from search they all disappear.

All these problems have started since the update and I presume as they are all external accounts Mac would be unprepared to help resolve it if I call them?

    Yes.

    I don't know. Hopefully not.

I have managed to rectify some of the issues and pretty much all of the accounts are now receiving and sending mail. I had to edit the smtp list and remove the old details which were still stored there. This seemed to be affecting sending emails.

The one thing I can't resolve is one of my accounts does not appear in the Sent folder. It is actually there if I click on the sent folder arrow head it appears below. But it has a big black dot next to its name and there are no emails in the folder. Even though I have been sending.

I can find them if I do a search of the email address in the sent folder but they disappear once I remove the search

I was wondering if there is a way of starting mail again from fresh.

How would I go about doing this? Deleting all the accounts including my icloud account and re installing every account again. But i would also want to remove all the old smtp options as well. Is there a clean reset for mail (I don't want to lose all my old emails though).

Judging by comments on my ISP's forum since the Security Update, Apple have issued a real turkey this time.

Those of us using Apple Mail via POP accounts had accounts stop receiving new mail. Investigation revealed that the Security Update had checked the "Use SSL" box when previously it was un-checked, and had unchecked the "Allow Insecure Authentication" although it was previously checked. Setting these back as they were before the Update has got the accounts working apparently normally again.

It's also been a good opportunity to give the ISP a good kicking over the slow progress with SSL.

Anyone else found has happened to them after the latest update?

If that's what you want to do, create new "On My Mac" mailboxes and move all the messages you want to keep into them. Then delete all your accounts. I don't think there's any point in that action, but that's not the question. Good luck.

These are standard options in the "Advanced" section of the account settings menu. Only takes a moment to alter them, but it's baffling why, without any notification, the Apple Security Update just went ahead and over-rode the user preferences.

I had no such issues with my POP mail accounts after installing the update.  So blanket statement does not apply.
