Display login as Name and Password not working?

Oddly, in Yosemite, with my system preference (under Users & Groups) set to display a request Name and Password at login, whenever my machine is reboot/restarted, i shows a login window with all the available user accounts (list of users).

has anyone else figured out this bug?

the Name and Password dialog does come up after the machine is woken from sleep, but not when the machine is restarted...

(this removes one level of security since a third party then only needs a password, as opposed to both a user name and password) to login to the machine.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

That setting has no effect on the FileVault unlock screen, which is what you're probably seeing.

hmm... i am using fire vault (work required), but i don't ever recall seeing a list of users when the machine was reboot using the prior operating systems.

IMHO, the setting, as i have specified (since OS X has existed), should not show a list of users on reboot. it should have a dialog box for a user name and a password.

i'm hoping someone has an explanation or a fix for this (i could call apple support i guess...)

the plot thickens... i just realized i should see what my Mac Pro (2010) is doing: it actually works as i would expect it to. (and it too has Fire Vault turned on)

There is no fix. If you don't want some users to be able to unlock the volume, you can (as administrator) remove that privilege in the Security & Privacy preference pane. Otherwise you'll have to live with the unlock screen as it is.

i think perhaps you've misinterpeted my question.

when a computer is rebooted or started after being powered off, it should end up with a login screen that just asks for a name and a password. my MacPro which also has Firevault enabled, does that. my Macbook Air does not. both are running 10.10.2 and have the system preference in the Users & Groups System Preference pane set to "Name and Password" (as opposed to list of users)

When you log out without rebooting, you will see the login screen. When you reboot, you will see the pre-boot unlock screen. If you know of a way to change the appearance of that screen, then you know something I don't know, have never heard of, and have never seen documented by Apple.

hi Linc,

i'm not claiming i know anything special. i'm just saying that something changed or there is some weird bug going on with my macbook air running Yosemite.

if you are calling the "pre-boot login screen" the one that comes up when you power up your Mac from being completely powered down, this is the one i'm concerned/talking about.

historically, going back to 10.0, just like all unix machines i've used over the decades, on this screen, one is prompted with a simple two blank login which requires both a username and password, as long as the system preference was set to this option. of course, if the system is set to display a "list of users," it would show that instead.

the "toggle" in the System preference is certainly there, and behaves as i expect on my 10.10.2 Mac Pro (2010), but it doesn't do anything on my 10.10.2 Macbook Air (2013). i really think this is a bug because this feature/setting has existed for many years and variations of Mac OS X.
