MacBook Air switches to 4:3 aspect ratio as soon as I plug it into a projector. How do I maintain 16:9 image to project?

My question says it all. The MacBook Air is running OS X 10.9.5, and the projector is an Optoma S316. Varying the aspect ratios directly on the projector only changes the size of the 4:3 image coming from the MacBook. How can I control the image on the MacBook in order to correct it to the desired 16:9 aspect ratio?

mende1, I tried that and selected 1280x1024 in place of the default 800x600, but it made no difference. And Kappy, yes, the projector can display 16:9. The projector's aspect-ratio choices are auto, native, 16:9 and 4:3, but toggling between them only alters the shape of the 4:3 image that the MacBook is sending to the projector.
