Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iMac has been displaying some startup issues. To further troubleshoot this situation, I would recommend working through the information and steps located in the attached article.

Mar 12, 2015 9:27 AM in response to joe_7399by MikeDallos,Thanks, Joe. I've done the safe boot, restart, and disk utility "the hard drive appears to be ok.") I'm running 10.10.2 Yosemite and things seem to be just fine--except that the clock/date etc on the menu bar still goes on and off every few seconds. I've gone into System Preferences and everything related to the clock/date is set on, but I'm still having that "going on and off" problem. Additionally, I've been afraid to click on Safari for fear that the old Beach Ball problem will resurface. Any suggestions on the menu bar issue?
Thank you
MD.
