Q: Have a late 2009 iMac with 8 gb of ram that has been having big difficulties with the last two software updates--Feb. 17 and today's security one. Had to safe boot today and it "stuck."l

Ever since the Feb. 17 update I've been unable to use Safari--after many attempts at fixes graciously suggested by this community.  So I'm staying with Firefox.  However, after I attempted to download today's security update, my computer froze again.  I have a late model 2009 iMac, 8 gbs of ram, which was running Yosemite very well until Feb. 17.  I tried a safe boot after today's problem and my computer "stuck" on the startup screen--after the ooriginal safe boot was successful.

    Greetings MikeDallos,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that your iMac has been displaying some startup issues. To further troubleshoot this situation, I would recommend working through the information and steps located in the attached article.

Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck - Apple Support

    Cheers,

    Joe

Thanks, Joe.  I've done the safe boot, restart, and disk utility "the hard drive appears to be ok.")  I'm running 10.10.2 Yosemite and things seem to be just fine--except that the clock/date etc on the menu bar still goes on and off every few seconds.  I've gone into System Preferences and everything related to the clock/date is set on, but I'm still having that "going on and off" problem.  Additionally, I've been afraid to click on Safari for fear that the old Beach Ball problem will resurface.  Any suggestions on the menu bar issue?

    Thank you

    MD.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to help identify the more obvious culprits.
