Whenever I have my headphones on, I never get a ping saying I have a new txt message and wind up missing it. It's kind of annoying.
Anyways, FWIW, I always have my phone on vibrate but usually don't even get a vibration

If you are not getting any alerts or at least a vibrate when you are listening to your music and the silent switch is on, then check to see if you have Do Not Disturbed turned on as that will prevent you from receiving any notification while that is turned on. If all your settings look good and it is still happening then I would look into contact Apple Support to look into it further as it may be something that may need more hands on to get it worked out.
