Q: My iPad is dead after trying to Update

I have about a 5yr old iPad. I plugged it into my MacBook Air to charge it, got a request to update iOS to 8.2. Then got error message 3014 saying it can't be updated nor restored. Now it won't launch.

Went to Support based on the error message 3014, got help page on going into the Terminal mode and checking Host files. I'm supposed to make a minor edit to the line containing: “gs.apple.com”.  That line is completely missing, probably the crux of the problem. My question is what is the number sequence that precedes this entry on that line? Can I use the number sequence in the example? Or is it something else? Can't get into the iPad, is it stored somewhere else on my laptop? When I go into iTunes on the laptop, the iPad doesn't even show up as a connected device tho' it's physically connected.  Ideas?

    Hello ,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post I understand that you're getting an iTunes update error of 3014 when trying to update your iPad.  If the gs.apple.com line does not exist in your hosts file, then you should continue to the next step of the article, to check your TCP/IP filtering and security software running on the computer.  You should be able to update to iOS 8.2 OTA (Over the Air) however.  To update Over the Air, connect your iPad to a Wi-Fi network and follow the directions below.

    Update your device wirelessly

The easiest way to update your device is wirelessly, also called “over the air.” Here’s how:

    1. Plug in your device to a power source.
    2. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.

    3. Tap Download and Install. Updates might download automatically while your device is connected to Wi-Fi and a power source.
    4. Tap Install, or tap Later to install the update later. If you use a passcode, you'll need to enter it before installing the update.

Alex, thank you for the message. There seems to be a more fundamental problem. Even when plugged into the wall, when the screen comes on, there is the Apple logo for 1-2 sec, then the screen shows a charger plug  with an arrow pointing up at the iTunes logo. I can't access anything, that's the only screen view I have. Is there some sequence of button pressing or pressing both the start and navigate buttons simultaneously that would override this reboot the iPad?

    Hi jwentf,

Thanks for providing additional details on the issue at hand.  It appears your iPad is in recovery mode, and will have to be restored by following the directions in the article below.  Once you plug in your iPad to your computer, iTunes will notify you that a device is in recovery mode, and will give you the option to either restore or update.  In this instance, you will have to select restore, which will reset the iPad to its factory settings.
