Flashing Icon - not booting

The Mac Mini started to a make a loud clicking noise (hard disk?) and we attempted to re-boot. Now the monitor only shows a flashing icon (file folder with a question mark) and the machine is not responding to any key strokes. New to Mac machines, please help.
