I have downloaded OS X Yosemite and attempted an install on my 2008 mac book pro. There seem to be a problem because for the last 1 hour the intro is sounding every 2 to 3 minutes but the screen remain black. It seems to be attempting to restart but failing?. Can anybody assist?

Try shutting down the computer with the power switch and then reboot. If you get to the Desktop, menu/About This Mac and see what OS is installed.

I cannot get it to reboot. Dead screen. It was something 10.8 The reason why I installed Yosemite is because I wanted to down load Garage Band and I got a message that I needed version 10.9. (I could not find an option to upgrade to it.) It may be Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard but I am lost in this zoo brother!
Like I said, Mac Book Pro 17" 2008 is about what I know. I just bought it for studio application as my RME400 sound card only work with Fire Wire 400
Shift command V did something. It ran some text on a black screen and then took me to login. I logged in and an error message appeared but it said something to the effect that there was a problem restarting and took me to a Diagnostics & Usage screen which is just frozen. (clicking on continue goes nowhere)
